Downer EDI delivered margin expansion and sustained earnings growth in FY26 despite a 7.5% decline in revenue to $9.7 billion, reflecting a deliberate shift toward higher-quality earnings over volume. The company’s underlying EBITA margin improved 70 basis points to 5.1%, with underlying NPATA growing 9.8% to $306.7 million, a performance that demonstrates operational leverage and cost discipline taking hold across the portfolio.

The results reveal a company successfully navigating portfolio transformation. Over three years, management has repositioned Downer away from lower-margin activities and toward higher-quality contracts aligned with structural growth themes. Revenue headwinds clearly reflect divestments and portfolio rationalization, yet the company has managed simultaneous improvements in profitability, cash generation, and balance sheet metrics. Statutory NPAT surged 51.2% to $225.4 million, a figure inflated by lower individually significant items versus the prior year, but the underlying NPATA growth of 9.8% reveals the genuine operational traction beneath the statutory moves.

Cash generation stands as a defining strength. Downer achieved a normalised cash conversion ratio of 91.1%, exceeding its greater than 90 percent target and demonstrating earnings quality. This cash generation enabled the company to reduce net debt to EBITDA to 0.8x while simultaneously returning capital to shareholders and reinvesting in the business. Basic EPS expanded 14.1% to 42.9 cents per share, while management raised the total dividend by 17.3% to 29.2 cents per share, maintaining full franking throughout.

The two-year EBITA margin of 4.7% across FY25 and FY26 exceeded management’s greater than 4.5% target, anchoring Downer’s progress against clearly defined financial objectives. Management identified four medium-term growth drivers: energy transition, data centres, defence, and transport infrastructure. Exposure to these themes positions Downer to benefit from structural demand tailwinds rather than relying on cyclical recovery.

Investors should focus on evidence that the company can sustain or expand margins above 5 percent while executing on the identified growth themes. The company also noted a workplace fatality in January 2026, highlighting that safety improvements remain an ongoing challenge in high-risk operational environments. Capital allocation decisions, including the balance between organic investment and the share buyback program, will shape shareholder returns as Downer pursues its medium-term strategy. This announcement is price sensitive and has been flagged as material by the ASX.
