Chalice Mining has secured an independent validation of its Gonneville Project’s environmental approvals pathway, a significant endorsement that removes a key execution risk for investors tracking the company’s progress toward a final investment decision. Dr Tom Hatton, former chair of the Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority from 2015 to 2020, completed a comprehensive review of Chalice’s environmental approvals strategy and concluded that the company has appropriately identified regulatory risks and established appropriate mitigation measures.

Dr Hatton’s credentials carry substantial weight in assessing environmental regulatory pathways. His 25-year tenure at CSIRO as a research scientist and executive included national leadership of water, marine and energy research. Beyond his EPA chairmanship, he has chaired the WA Marine Parks Authority, led the 2018 Independent Scientific Panel Inquiry into Hydraulic Fracture Stimulation in Western Australia, and currently serves as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Western Australia. Critically, Dr Hatton holds no financial interest in Chalice or the Gonneville Project, providing genuinely independent perspective on the company’s regulatory positioning.

The Gonneville Project itself represents a substantial resource development opportunity. Located on Chalice-owned farmland approximately 70 kilometres north-east of Perth, the 100-percent-owned project targets platinum group metals alongside nickel, copper and cobalt. Regulatory approval represents one of the most significant execution risks for greenfield mining projects in Australia, making independent expert validation particularly valuable to investors. Dr Hatton’s review specifically confirmed that Chalice has conducted extensive engagement with State and Commonwealth regulators, Traditional Owners and other stakeholders. Both the WA and Commonwealth Governments have granted the project priority status, a factor that strengthens the company’s approvals timeline.

The timing of this announcement carries strategic importance. Chalice targets a final investment decision in the first half of 2028, a timeline that depends on successful environmental approvals occurring in parallel with development studies and financing activities. Dr Hatton’s review concludes that this pathway is realistic and that the company is taking an appropriate and prudent approach to regulatory processes. For investors, this independent validation provides confidence that management’s FID timeline is grounded in genuine regulatory progress rather than aspirational planning.

The practical implications centre on de-risking a project that could become one of Australia’s next major critical minerals developments. Environmental and regulatory risks represent genuine execution hurdles for mining projects in Australia, and having an independent expert of Dr Hatton’s standing confirm that Chalice has identified these risks appropriately and put mitigation measures in place reduces uncertainty around the pathway to development. This is particularly relevant in the context of Australia’s emphasis on domestic critical minerals supply.

Investors should watch for the next phases of actual regulatory submissions and approvals outcomes against the timeline outlined in this review. Success in meeting or exceeding the approvals milestones identified by Dr Hatton would further validate the FID pathway.
