WAM Leaders has announced the successful completion of a $313 million capital raising through its Share Purchase Plan and an upscaled Placement, cementing the listed investment company’s status as one of Australia’s largest LICs with assets under management now exceeding $2.2 billion. The SPP component closed on 1 September, attracting participation from over 4,700 shareholders who subscribed for $88 million of stock at $1.294 per share, a 2.5% discount to the five-day volume-weighted average price at issue.
The strong uptake of the SPP, where 42% of applicants took their full $30,000 allocation and all participants received their requested shares without scale-back, signals robust retail shareholder appetite for additional exposure to the fund. This level of support suggests investors retain confidence in the investment team’s approach and the portfolio’s direction heading into the fund’s second decade as a listed company.
The expansion of WAM Leaders’ equity base carries tangible benefits for investors. The additional capital provides portfolio manager Matthew Haupt and his team with greater flexibility to deploy across Australian large-cap opportunities as they emerge. For a fund focused on stock selection in a liquid market, having a larger capital pool enhances the ability to build meaningful positions during periods when compelling valuations appear, potentially improving portfolio returns over time. Scaling also brings operational efficiencies, with larger fund platforms typically benefiting from lower fixed expense ratios relative to assets under management, a cost advantage that accrues directly to shareholders.
Dividend income remains central to the WAM Leaders proposition. The fund has maintained its track record of fully franked distributions, with the final dividend of 4.8 cents per share bringing the full-year payout to 9.6 cents. At the SPP price, this represents a fully franked yield of 7.4% and a grossed-up yield of 10.6%, an attractive proposition for investors in tax brackets where franking credits hold material value. The sustainability of this payout policy depends on the fund delivering positive investment performance and maintaining sufficient franking credit reserves, both factors contingent on the fund’s ability to generate profits and benefit from franking distributions from its holdings.
The key question for investors now centres on capital deployment and its impact on future performance. WAM Leaders has successfully increased its asset base substantially, but the true test will be how effectively management deploys the fresh capital into market opportunities. Shareholders will be watching portfolio positioning and returns closely over the next 12 to 24 months to assess whether the larger platform translates into improved outperformance or simply a bigger vehicle for achieving market-level returns. This announcement is price-sensitive information and has been classified as a material announcement by the ASX.
