Australian United Investment Company (ASX: AUI)View stock profile →

Australian United Investment Company Limited completed a significant merger with Diversified United Investment Limited on 30 April 2026, creating a larger listed investment company with a market capitalisation of approximately $2.6 billion and a combined portfolio valued at roughly $3.1 billion. This combination represents a strategic consolidation within the Australian investment company sector, bringing together two entities to achieve greater operational scale and portfolio diversification.

The merger delivers tangible benefits to shareholders through several channels. The combined entity benefits from tax consolidation, which provides increased flexibility in managing its holdings and potentially enhancing after-tax returns. The removal of duplicated administrative expenses across the merged group should result in lower ongoing costs, directly benefiting shareholders through reduced fees and expenses. The enlarged portfolio also creates opportunities for better risk management and potentially more efficient capital deployment across a broader range of investments.

A notable consequence of the merger is the introduction of an international investment component to AUI’s portfolio. The portfolio inherited approximately 10.5 percent international equities from the merger, prompting the board to conduct a strategic review and formally adopt an international investment policy. Going forward, the company intends to maintain international investments at normally between 10 and 20 percent of the overall portfolio, held primarily through international managed funds. This shift reflects changing market conditions and the potential benefits of geographic diversification, moving beyond AUI’s traditional focus on Australian listed securities.

The Australian portfolio component remains anchored to established criteria for investment selection. The company evaluates positions based on industry outlook, a company’s competitive positioning within its sector, earnings per share growth potential, dividend yield and franking levels, management quality and alignment with shareholder interests, balance sheet strength, and environmental, social and governance considerations. This framework demonstrates a disciplined approach focused on quality securities and sustainable income generation.

The company’s stated investment objectives remain centred on creating and maintaining a diversified portfolio of quality Australian companies listed on the ASX, with the new international dimension providing additional exposure. The investment horizon remains medium to long-term, with an emphasis on delivering sustainable dividend income to shareholders while maintaining full franking where possible. This objective maintains continuity with AUI’s historical positioning while acknowledging the benefits of geographic diversification.

Investors should monitor how the merged entity deploys its larger capital base and whether the cost synergies identified at announcement translate into improved net tangible asset growth and dividend sustainability. The allocation and performance of the new international investment program will also warrant close attention, as will any further adjustments to the portfolio strategy as the combined business settles into its larger operating scale. The market will be particularly interested in tracking whether the merger delivers on its promises of reduced administration costs and improved shareholder returns.
