Yancoal delivered a standout 2025 performance with record saleable coal production of 38.6 million tonnes alongside a fully franked dividend of 67 cents per share, impressive results given the softer pricing environment for both thermal and metallurgical coal. The company generated $5.95 billion in revenue that translated to $1.44 billion in operating EBITDA, a 24.2% margin reflecting disciplined cost management across its mining portfolio despite global headwinds.
The production achievement is particularly notable given market conditions. Yancoal’s tier one assets accounted for 89% of total saleable output, minimising exposure to marginal, higher-cost operations. Hunter Valley Operations led the charge with a 27% increase in run-of-mine production and 20% growth in saleable tonnes. Mount Thorley Warkworth and Moolarben also expanded volumes, confirming the productivity and quality of the company’s core assets. This concentration in best-in-class mines positions the business well for profitability through commodity cycles.
Net profit after tax reached $440 million despite thermal and metallurgical coal price indices averaging lower through 2025, a direct result of cost discipline and production growth offsetting softer realised prices. The company ended the year with $2.13 billion in cash, a substantial buffer that provides flexibility in a volatile commodity market. Chinese steel demand softened and Northern Hemisphere conditions remained milder than historical averages, yet Yancoal still grew output and maintained acceptable returns.
Dividends warrant careful attention. The total payout of 67 cents per share was fully franked, with the 118% payout ratio reflecting a special dividend component alongside the interim and final distributions. Fully franked dividends are particularly valuable for Australian investors due to franking credits on the entire distribution, a structural advantage over many global competitors that do not frank their payouts. The high payout ratio demonstrates management confidence in cash generation capability even in softer market environments.
The company attributes resilience to its OneYancoal operating model and P4 Change 4 Tomorrow sustainability framework, suggesting a focus on operational efficiency and long-term business durability. For investors, the key watchpoints are thermal and metallurgical coal price recovery, Northern Hemisphere demand trends, Chinese steel consumption patterns, and any capital allocation announcements given the elevated cash position. Yancoal’s combination of record production, cost discipline, and generous fully franked dividend makes it an interesting opportunity in a cyclically softer market.
