Contact Energy (ASX: CEN)View stock profile →

Contact Energy’s August operating report demonstrates strong cost discipline, with unit generation costs falling to $40.90/MWh from $57.52/MWh in the prior year period, despite managing a lower overall generation volume of 1,125GWh versus 1,174GWh. Own generation costs improved even more sharply to $27.38/MWh from $41.99/MWh, suggesting the company has successfully reduced production expenses across its renewable fleet while maintaining wholesale electricity and steam revenue per megawatt-hour at $164.59/MWh, up marginally from $164.24/MWh. The magnitude of this cost reduction relative to flat or improving pricing metrics signals operational efficiency gains that should support margin expansion.

The retail business delivered solid momentum with mass market electricity sales reaching 550GWh compared to 454GWh in August 2025, representing a 21 percent increase year-on-year. The retail netback of $148.57/MWh held virtually flat against the prior year’s $148.36/MWh, indicating that Contact maintained pricing power while growing volumes in a competitive market. This combination of volume growth and stable margins reflects effective customer acquisition and retention strategies in the mass market segment, which typically carries higher margins than wholesale operations.

Hydro storage levels remain supportive for forward earnings, with South Island controlled storage at 166 percent of mean and North Island controlled storage at 84 percent of mean as of mid-September. The total Clutha scheme storage stood at 138 percent of mean, reflecting inflows during August that came in at 164 percent of mean. Forward market pricing for Q4 2026 electricity at Otahuhu had climbed to $45.50/MWh by mid-September from $39.50/MWh at month-end August, suggesting improving market conditions ahead. National electricity demand for August contracted marginally at 0.3 percent year-on-year, though the longer comparison shows demand up 5.3 percent against August 2024, indicating underlying demand growth despite seasonal softness.

Contact’s capital pipeline includes Te Mihi Stage 2 geothermal expected online in Q3 2027 at $712 million total project cost, the Glenbrook-Ohurua Battery 2 targeting Q1 2028 at $235 million, and the Glorit Solar joint venture project scheduled for Q4 2028 at $316 million. Investors should monitor execution progress on these developments and track whether forward market pricing strength continues to support management confidence in capital deployment returns. This announcement is price sensitive and has been flagged as material by the ASX.
