BlueScope Steel (ASX: BSL)View stock profile →

BlueScope Steel delivered a significant earnings upgrade in FY2026, with underlying EBIT of $1.27 billion and reported net profit after tax of $802 million, representing an 857 percent increase on the prior year. The company announced a final dividend of 65 cents per share alongside a special dividend of 70 cents, completing its commitment to deliver $3 per share in shareholder returns during calendar year 2026.

The strength in reported earnings reflected improved US spread environments, record performance from the Southeast Asia segment, and solid cost management across Australian operations. Record dispatch volumes of specialty steel products, including COLORBOND and TRUECORE brands, demonstrated continued customer demand for value-added offerings despite headwinds from sustained low Asian spreads tied to elevated Chinese export volumes.

Beyond the headline result, management signalled a strategic inflection point for the business. Having invested heavily in two major capital projects through FY2026, BlueScope is now transitioning into the ramp-up phase. The New Zealand electric arc furnace, designed to deliver lower-emissions steelmaking, has commenced operations with a flexible demand-responsive capability. Simultaneously, the new metal coating line at Erskine Park in Western Sydney represents a cornerstone asset for the company’s premium coated steel ambitions. Both facilities are moving from construction into productive capacity expansion.

Operationally, BlueScope has fully delivered on a $200 million cost and productivity program while simultaneously implementing what management describes as a reset of the functional operating model. This reset is designed to drive efficiency gains and leverage scale, positioning the company to capture an additional $150 million in cost benefits during FY2027. Such structural cost improvements, when combined with normalizing capital intensity post-project completion, should translate into materially stronger free cash flow generation.

The capital management framework reflects this improved outlook. Management has committed to deliver a total of $3 per share in shareholder returns during FY2027, maintaining the elevated return profile established in the prior period. This level of distribution capacity suggests confidence in both near-term earnings stability and the company’s competitive positioning across its geographies.

Sustainability considerations have also shaped the investment program. The New Zealand EAF is projected to reduce the operating site’s emissions by more than 50 percent, representing a meaningful structural reduction in the company’s carbon intensity. The company is also advancing Project NeoSmelt as a potential decarbonization pathway to 2050, which could position BlueScope to participate in any emergent green iron industry development in Australia.

BlueScope’s FY2026 result demonstrates a business navigating through a period of significant change, with major investments now beginning to contribute earnings while cost initiatives drive operating leverage. Investors will be watching closely for the trajectory of project ramp-up through FY2027, cost realization rates, and any commentary on the sustainability of the improved US spread environment, particularly given the cyclical nature of steelmaking returns.
