Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals has released a commercial update on the vitiligo treatment market, providing detailed benchmarks on the efficacy of current standard of care therapies and emerging competitors. The announcement comes as the company assesses the commercial opportunity for SCENESSE® (afamelanotide) in combination with narrowband ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) phototherapy, particularly as Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors gain regulatory approval and advance through clinical trials.

The vitiligo market opportunity centers on extensive depigmentation affecting 10 percent or more of body surface area, a patient population that currently lacks an effective therapy. Narrowband UVB phototherapy remains the standard of care and most widely used treatment, requiring patients to attend sessions two to three times per week for 12 to 18 months. Clinical efficacy data reveals significant limitations, however. A 2025 study of 176 patients showed only 45 percent achieved clinically significant repigmentation, with the highest success rates on the face and neck at 53 percent. Broader data from an analysis of 1,428 patients across 35 studies found just 19 percent achieved marked response after six months and 36 percent after 12 months of treatment. Clinical response correlates with longer duration and higher cumulative radiation dose exceeding 356 J/cm².

Competition is intensifying with the emergence of topical and systemic JAK inhibitors. Ruxolitinib 1.5 percent cream was the first pharmaceutical product approved for vitiligo, though it is indicated for lesions affecting less than 10 percent of body surface area. Phase II data showed 45 to 50 percent of patients achieved at least 50 percent improvement in facial vitiligo after 24 weeks, compared to just 3 percent for placebo. Phase III results from over 670 patients demonstrated 50.3 percent achieved facial vitiligo clearance at week 52 with continuous therapy. Several oral JAK inhibitors are advancing through late-stage development, with upadacitinib Phase III data showing 19.4 to 21.5 percent of treated patients achieving total body vitiligo improvement at week 48, versus 5.9 percent for placebo.

Clinuvel’s commercial review establishes objective efficacy benchmarks as the company positions SCENESSE® combination therapy in this evolving market. The completion of trial CUV105 comparing afamelanotide plus NB-UVB to NB-UVB monotherapy provides direct comparison data that may demonstrate clinical advantages over standard of care and competitive alternatives. The expansion of treatment options, particularly oral JAK inhibitors, validates the unmet medical need in extensive vitiligo but also creates a more crowded therapeutic landscape.

Investors should monitor clinical trial readouts from SCENESSE® combination therapy studies to assess efficacy relative to JAK inhibitors and standard of care. Market adoption rates and reimbursement decisions for competing therapies will also shape commercial prospects. This announcement is classified as price sensitive and has been flagged as material by the ASX.
