Cleanaway Waste Management (ASX: CWY)View stock profile →

Cleanaway Waste Management has released its FY2026 results showing divergent trends in topline and bottom-line performance. Revenue expanded by 13.5% to $4,371.3 million, reflecting solid underlying demand in the waste management sector. However, this revenue growth has not translated to strong profit outcomes, with net profit attributable to ordinary shareholders declining 37.2% to $98.5 million from $156.9 million in FY2025. The absolute net profit figure fell to $98.2 million from $158.5 million, representing a 38% contraction year-on-year.

This disconnect between revenue and profit expansion points to significant margin compression across the business. Cleanaway operates across three main segments, including Solid Waste Services, ETS-Oils & Technical Services and Health Services, and ETS-Industrial Services. The profit decline suggests either increased costs in servicing the higher revenue base, unfavorable product mix shifts, or a combination of both factors. Investors will want to review the full financial report and management commentary to understand the drivers of margin pressure and management’s plans to restore profitability.

A particularly concerning metric is the reported Net Tangible Assets per share, which deteriorated significantly from negative 1.5 cents to negative 20.1 cents. Negative NTA indicates the company’s liabilities exceed its tangible assets on a per-share basis, which can limit financial flexibility and raise questions about balance sheet strength and capital structure management going forward.

Despite the profit decline, Cleanaway has maintained its dividend payments. The interim dividend of 3.35 cents per share was paid on April 16, 2026, and the company has declared a final dividend of 3.50 cents per share, with a record date of September 14, 2026 and payment date of October 8, 2026. Both dividends are fully franked at the 14% tax rate for franking credit purposes. This dividend maintenance suggests management confidence in the underlying business, though the sustainability of distributions given the declining profitability and deteriorating NTA warrants careful monitoring.

The company’s strategic response to current headwinds centers on Blueprint 2030 2.0, an initiative aimed at making Cleanaway a more customer-led and digitally enabled business. When monitoring the situation, investors should focus on detailed segment analysis in the full financial report to identify which business units are driving margin pressure, management commentary on cost inflation and pricing power, and the company’s capital management priorities as the balance sheet trajectory deteriorates. The annual general meeting scheduled for October 22, 2026 in Brisbane may provide additional insight into management’s assessment of near-term challenges and strategic responses. This announcement has been flagged as price sensitive and material by the ASX.
