Fortescue’s Blacksmith Project has emerged as a standout acquisition, with the mineral resource more than doubling to 615 million tonnes at an average iron grade of 56.0% as at 30 June 2026, compared with 243 million tonnes at 59.3% when the company acquired Red Hawk Mining in March 2025. The company has now declared a maiden ore reserve of 196 million tonnes of dry product at a 58.0% Fe grade, validating the asset’s development potential and justifying the A$254 million acquisition price paid less than 18 months ago.

The resource increase reflects both genuine geological expansion and a methodological shift in how Fortescue reports its estimates. The company lowered the cut-off grade from between 54% and 57.5% Fe to 51.5% Fe, aligning with the reporting basis used at its nearby Solomon Operations. This standardisation across assets, combined with a targeted technical program including diamond drilling and assay validation work, supports the resource growth and demonstrates rigorous verification of inherited data from the previous operator.

For Fortescue’s operational profile, the reserve declaration carries strategic significance. The Blacksmith deposits (Delta, Eagle, Blackjack, Champion and Paragon) sit approximately 25 kilometres west of the Valley of Queens mine and represent a natural extension of Solomon’s infrastructure. Management indicated the expanded resource extends the operating life of the Firetail processing plant while reducing medium-term hematite strip ratios to around 1.5, a meaningful improvement in ore quality economics. This integration benefit was not immediately apparent at acquisition and represents value creation beyond the initial purchase thesis.

The technical work undertaken since acquisition appears thorough. Fortescue re-estimated resource models using its own methodologies and revised bulk density parameters to ensure consistency with established operations. The fact that measured and indicated resources comprise 97% of the total endows the reserve with a higher confidence level than greenfield projects typically carry, reducing technical execution risk as development progresses. The Ajax and Badger deposits remain unmodelled, suggesting further upside potential if exploration warrants inclusion.

Investors should monitor the mine plan evolution and strip ratio realisation as development studies advance. The company’s ability to maintain the stated 1.5 strip ratio while ramping production will determine whether Blacksmith achieves the premium economics implied by current guidance. The maiden reserve declaration removes a critical milestone uncertainty and supports continued investment in the asset. This announcement is price sensitive and has been flagged as material by the ASX.
