Iress Limited’s first-half results reveal a company firing on multiple fronts, with Cash EBITDA surging 47.1% to $61.1m while margins expanded 740 basis points to 24.5%. This margin expansion, coupled with disciplined execution across the business, signals that management has successfully navigated the company through a simplification phase and emerged leaner and more profitable.

The earnings quality improvement is particularly noteworthy for investors. Underlying profit after tax climbed 18.4% to $38.8m while revenue grew just 2.5% to $250.0m, pointing to a company that has worked through its cost base effectively. The business efficiency program has delivered $31.5m in annualized savings to date, with a further $6-9m expected in the second half, suggesting margin expansion may continue. Statutory NPAT’s 85% jump to $32.0m reflects one-off items, but the real story is how underlying profitability is accelerating despite modest top-line growth.

Recurring revenue grew 3.4% to $237.8m and now represents 95% of group revenue, a protective factor in uncertain economic times. This stable revenue foundation, combined with the strong balance sheet carrying just 0.5x leverage, gives Iress considerable financial flexibility. That strength is reflected in management’s willingness to increase the interim dividend by 27.3% to 14.0 cents per share, fully franked, signaling confidence in both near-term cashflow and the sustainability of the business model.

The strategic pivot outlined by CEO Andrew Russell represents the next phase of the turnaround. Having simplified the business, Iress is now investing in product evolution through a partnership with Thoughtworks and embedding artificial intelligence across its product and engineering teams. This shift from efficiency plays to growth investments carries execution risk, but the company’s track record in recent years suggests management has earned credibility. Revenue guidance remains cautious at plus 1 to 2 percent for the full year, yet Cash EBITDA is guided to grow 21 to 26 percent, with a 25 percent margin run-rate targeted at year-end.

Investors should monitor whether Iress successfully delivers on its product evolution strategy without sacrificing the margin gains achieved through the efficiency program. The real test comes at full-year results when the company can demonstrate that the Thoughtworks partnership and artificial intelligence adoption are translating into either revenue acceleration or further margin expansion. This announcement is price sensitive and flagged as material by the ASX.
