nib holdings limited delivered underlying operating profit growth of 9.1% to $260.9 million for the full year ending 30 June 2026, outpacing revenue growth of 6.2% to $3.8 billion and signalling improving operational leverage across the health services group. Net profit after tax of $186.9 million arrived ahead of market expectations, underpinned by disciplined pricing, claims management and a productivity agenda that harvested $61 million of value during the year.

The Australian residents private health insurance business, which represents the largest revenue contributor at $3.0 billion (up 6.4%), achieved record sales with net policyholder growth of 1.9% for the year. This performance is notable in a competitive market where affordability pressures have constrained consumer spending. The business maintained its net margin target range of 6 to 7 percent, suggesting nib held pricing discipline while absorbing elevated risk equalisation costs. Health Services, the care coordination and management arm, shifted into profitability following prior years of investment, while international operations delivered pleasing growth and New Zealand staged a strong recovery.

Capital management reflects management confidence in both current earnings and forward cash generation. The Board declared a final dividend of 21.0 cents per share, comprising a base dividend and a 5 cent special return, lifting the full year distribution to 34.0 cents compared with 29.0 cents in FY25. Management has also increased its target dividend payout ratio to 65 to 75 percent, signalling an intention to distribute a higher proportion of earnings and return excess capital to shareholders. This sits comfortably with the group’s strengthened balance sheet.

Operational efficiency gains underscore nib’s technology and automation roadmap. The group processed 94.8 percent of Australian residents claims within 24 hours, with 86.3 percent flowing through automated systems. The deployment of nibGPT across more than 700 operational staff and automation of call summaries is reducing administration overhead and freeing resources for customer-facing support. The First Choice provider network, expanded during the year to include audiology and mental health services, helped customers save $57 million in out-of-pocket expenses. These outcomes contributed to a Net Promoter Score of plus 32, a respectable outcome for a health insurer.

The group supported 1.95 million customers across Australia and New Zealand and more than 40,000 NDIS participants through nib Thrive. The telehealth business facilitated over 150,000 consultations, while health management programs engaged more than 22,300 customers, underscoring management’s pivot toward coordinating care rather than solely funding insurance claims.

Investors should monitor how management navigates affordability pressures in the Australian market and whether cost of living headwinds impact policyholder growth momentum in coming quarters. The sustainability of the elevated dividend payout ratio will merit attention, particularly if operating profit growth moderates.
