QBE Insurance Group reported net profit of $1,033 million for the half year ended 30 June 2026, representing modest growth from $1,022 million in the prior period. The more striking result comes from the statutory insurance operating profit, which climbed to $1,127 million from $988 million, indicating stronger operational performance beneath the net profit line. This improvement reflects disciplined underwriting and targeted premium growth across the Group’s key markets.

Insurance revenue reached $11,953 million, up from $10,875 million a year earlier, driven by gross written premium expansion in International and North America segments. The Group’s management has pursued deliberate, profitable growth rather than chasing volume at any cost, a strategy that appears to be bearing fruit as competitors grapple with margin compression across the insurance industry. Catastrophe costs remained well controlled and came in below the Group’s internal allowance, with only modest impacts from the Middle East conflict factored into the half-year result.

Supporting the operating result was favourable prior year development of reserves, a benefit flowing from recent initiatives to strengthen the consistency and resilience of reserving practices across the Group. This represents a positive sign for management’s commitment to improving governance and risk management, particularly given the reserve volatility that has plagued the broader insurance sector in recent years. Offsetting these tailwinds were ongoing pressures in the Accident and Health segment and elevated large claim activity, headwinds that warrant close monitoring in the second half.

Investment performance proved mixed. Reported net investment income fell to $657 million from $929 million, a decline driven largely by the impact of interest rate movements on risk-free rate comparisons. Adjusting for this technical effect, investment income increased to $828 million from $788 million, reflecting supportive core fixed income returns and solid performance across risk assets. This adjusted view provides a clearer picture of underlying investment performance and underscores the value of diversified asset allocation in a volatile macro environment.

The effective tax rate increased to 24.9 percent from 23.1 percent, a shift primarily attributable to higher earnings contributions from International and Australia Pacific operations, which operate at elevated average tax rates compared to the North America segment. The dividend was set at 30 percent franked, with the unfranked portion designated as conduit foreign income, and will be paid on 2 October 2026 to shareholders on the register as of 25 August 2026.

Investors should monitor the trajectory of Accident and Health performance and large claim activity in the second half, as these remain material headwinds to results. The adequacy of catastrophe provisions will also be worth tracking as the Atlantic hurricane season approaches. Finally, watch for any management commentary on rate adequacy and the sustainability of current premium growth momentum given competitive dynamics in key markets. This announcement is price sensitive and has been flagged as material by the ASX.
