Suncorp Group’s FY26 results reflect earnings growth and confident capital management, with the group delivering cash earnings of $1,042 million and underlying earnings up 4.5% despite navigating significant natural hazard claims. The group’s decision to return $356 million to shareholders in FY27, comprising a fully franked 10 cent special dividend and up to $250 million in on-market buybacks, signals management’s conviction in the balance sheet strength and the sustainability of earnings. This follows a $400 million buyback completed in FY26 that cancelled 23 million shares, demonstrating disciplined capital allocation focused on shareholder returns.
The headline challenge in FY26 was natural hazard experience, which totalled $2.0 billion across 120,000 claims from 18 weather events exceeding $10 million each. This performance ran $254 million above the group’s own allowance, a material headwind to earnings. However, management’s ability to deliver earnings growth and maintain margins at the top end of the target range despite this pressure suggests the pricing and risk selection capabilities are working effectively. The group’s investment in sophisticated underwriting tools and artificial intelligence is enabling better risk segmentation and pricing discipline, particularly in target segments within the Consumer, Commercial, and Personal Injury portfolios.
Gross written premium growth of 3.6%, adjusted for foreign exchange movements, was supported by expansion across most divisions. Consumer motor and home portfolios each grew above 5%, driven by organic unit growth in Australia. Commercial lines grew 3.6%, while the Personal Injury portfolio expanded 5.5% with support from pricing increases in New South Wales and Queensland. New Zealand direct operations achieved 4.8% growth through the AA Insurance channel, though the intermediated market remained subdued by weak economic conditions and soft commercial competition. This segmented growth suggests Suncorp is gaining market share in well-selected pockets while retreating from less profitable exposure.
The balance sheet position provides strategic flexibility, with the group holding $518 million in excess capital above the midpoint of its Common Equity Tier 1 target range. This excess was bolstered by proceeds from the aggregate reinsurance placement and deferred New Zealand life business proceeds, demonstrating active capital management. With investment portfolio yields rising to approximately 5%, net investment returns of $553 million support earnings resilience. The underlying insurance trading ratio of 11.8% reflects effective expense management and cost control across the group.
Looking ahead, investors should monitor several key factors: the execution and timing of the $250 million on-market buyback programme over FY27, the sustainability of reserve releases that benefited FY26 results, and how natural hazard claims develop in FY27 given climate volatility. The progression of technology investments and AI capabilities in underwriting and pricing will also influence competitive positioning. Additionally, New Zealand economic conditions and the commercial market outlook will be worth tracking given the headwinds noted in the intermediated channel.
