Appen Limited’s Q2 FY26 results demonstrate accelerating momentum in what has become a pivotal position within the artificial intelligence supply chain. The company delivered quarterly revenue of $65.1 million, representing 26 percent growth against the prior corresponding period and 19 percent expansion from Q1, while underlying EBITDA (before foreign exchange) swung to positive $4.4 million from a loss in the year-ago quarter. This $5.0 million improvement signals genuine operational leverage beginning to emerge as the AI data market matures.
The standout performer remains Appen China, which generated $41.3 million in quarterly revenue, up 75 percent year-on-year and now running at an annualized rate exceeding $175 million. This dramatic acceleration reflects the intensity of AI development in China and Appen’s entrenched position as a data partner to leading model builders in the region. Management attributed this sustained growth to the strength of relationships with Chinese AI labs, suggesting these arrangements have moved beyond experimental engagements to become core production workflows for model development.
Appen Global, comprising Western markets, generated $23.8 million in the quarter, up 20 percent from Q1 FY26. The company noted further positive outcomes from expanded projects with leading AI labs and ongoing progress in penetrating frontier AI development centers in the United States. Management also flagged opportunities to deliver cost reductions through expanded use of AI in its own operations, hinting that margin expansion may not depend entirely on revenue growth but also on operational efficiency gains as the year progresses.
On the balance sheet, Appen exited the half-year with $44.7 million in cash, or A$64.8 million at the 30 June exchange rate. This liquidity position supports both organic growth investments and potential strategic activity, giving management flexibility amid an industry consolidation backdrop. Half-year revenue reached $119.9 million, up 17 percent year-on-year, while underlying EBITDA for the six months totaled $5.3 million, reflecting a $7.5 million improvement against H1 FY25.
The company reaffirmed full-year FY26 guidance of revenue between $270 million and $300 million, alongside an underlying EBITDA margin of approximately 5 to 10 percent. For investors, the critical question centers on whether Appen can sustain China’s explosive growth trajectory while achieving that margin guidance, or whether the strong balance sheet and maturing global presence position the company for upside surprise. The next focal point will be second-half FY26 performance, particularly whether Appen Global accelerates toward growth rates witnessed in China and whether the flagged operational AI deployments deliver promised cost benefits before year end. This announcement is price sensitive and has been flagged as material by the ASX.
