Mercury NZ delivered a stronger than expected first quarter result, with trading margin reaching NZ$445 million, representing 19% growth compared to the prior corresponding period despite a significant headwind from hydrological inflows. The performance reflects the effectiveness of the company’s diversified generation strategy and disciplined portfolio management, particularly relevant given that hydro inflows fell to the second percentile of historical distribution compared to the 71st percentile achieved in the prior year quarter.
The quarter’s resilience emerged from Mercury’s advancing renewable energy development programme. Kaiwera Downs Stage 2, the NZ$486 million expansion project, achieved full generation capacity within the two-year development timeline, contributing 36 turbines and 155 megawatts of installed capacity. The Kaiwaikawe Wind Farm also reached full commissioning with all 12 turbines online and generating electricity since July. These completed projects demonstrate material progress toward the company’s transition away from hydro dependency, with generation volumes showing the planned portfolio rebalancing. Wind and geothermal generation increased by 307 gigawatt-hours, offsetting the 332 gigawatt-hour decline in hydro volumes as Waikato river inflows experienced a drought year.
Management flagged capital expenditure guidance for the financial year, with sustaining infrastructure and business capex anticipated at approximately NZ$150 million, while growth capex is expected to range between NZ$300 million and NZ$400 million. Puke Kapo Hau Wind Farm, the next project in the development pipeline, is on track with construction works scheduled to commence in November 2026. This capital allocation profile reflects management’s commitment to maintaining disciplined investment while advancing the renewable development programme within stated financial guardrails.
The quarterly performance provides clarity on the company’s execution capability in bringing large renewable projects to full generation on schedule and within development timelines. Mercury’s generation portfolio now encompasses a more geographically and seasonally diverse asset base, reducing the volatility that characterised prior periods of low hydro inflows. Management indicated that based on current operational outlook, the company remains on track to deliver full-year FY27 EBITDAF guidance, suggesting confidence in the underlying business trajectory.
Investors should monitor the progression of Puke Kapo Hau Wind Farm through its November start date, the company’s management of capex within stated guidance ranges, and any updates on hydro inflow normalisation as the year progresses. The completion of major development projects provides a clearer lens on the company’s earnings profile and capacity to service debt while returning capital to shareholders.
