Bank of Queensland (ASX: BOQ) – Bank of Queensland FY26 Results Presentation

Bank of Queensland (ASX: BOQ)View stock profile →

Bank of Queensland reported cash earnings after tax of $358 million for the financial year ended 31 August 2026, down 7 percent from $383 million in FY25. The result reflects the ongoing transformation of the bank’s platform and business mix, though headline earnings mask material progress in underlying profitability drivers. The decline is largely attributable to a 7 percent increase in operating expenses and higher loan impairment charges, though these trends occurred against the backdrop of strategic restructuring that management characterises as foundational to future growth.

Net interest margin improved 6 basis points to 1.70 percent, driven primarily by a 6 basis point benefit from at-call deposit repricing as the bank optimised its deposit mix. The bank’s ability to expand margins despite intensifying competition in both lending and funding speaks to disciplined balance sheet management and the benefit of higher interest rates on customer deposit costs. Management targets a modest 1H27 uplift in net interest margin, subject to market conditions, though this will depend on the path of rate expectations and competitive pressures in the retail and commercial segments.

The transformation programme delivered material strategic milestones. ME platform migration to the digital bank is complete, with approximately 350,000 customers now consolidated onto a single technology platform. The digital bank processed 88 percent of home lending applications and 87 percent of deposit originations in August 2026, demonstrating the platform’s ability to operate at scale. The bank has also reduced retail branches to 102 locations, aligned with customer behaviour and Queensland heritage positioning, while the Capgemini partnership now supports technology and business processing functions. These changes position the bank to achieve the $250 million productivity programme target, with 82 percent of benefits delivered by the end of FY26.

Home lending balances declined 8 percent to $52.9 billion, reflecting lower settlement volumes and customer migration from legacy channels, though application volumes reached $5.2 billion in the fourth quarter, the strongest in two years. Commercial lending grew 16 percent on a normalised basis to $18.9 billion, driven by specialist relationships across healthcare, agribusiness and diversified industries. The whole-of-loan sale of approximately $3.6 billion in equipment finance to Challenger Limited was completed in May 2026, generating capital-light income through a forward flow arrangement while reducing risk-weighted assets and funding requirements. Capital returned to shareholders totalled approximately $295 million, comprising a 15 cent special dividend and an on-market buy-back programme.

The CET1 ratio strengthened 70 basis points to 11.64 percent, sitting above the management target range of 10.25 to 10.75 percent. Total dividends for the year reached 55 cents per share, comprising a 20 cent final dividend, the 15 cent special dividend paid in August, and the 20 cent interim dividend. Management targets flat cost growth in FY27, supported by benefits from ME decommissioning and the Capgemini partnership, while targeting commercial lending growth comparable to FY26 and a return to home lending growth. Investors should monitor the trajectory of the digital bank application volumes through the coming year and the extent to which the bank recaptures home lending market share as the rate cycle potentially shifts. This announcement is price sensitive and was flagged as material to the ASX.
