BHP Group (ASX: BHP) – BHP Q3 2026 Quarterly Activities Report

BHP Group (ASX: BHP)View stock profile →

BHP Group reported a challenging first quarter of FY27, marked by two fatalities at Escondida and Peak Downs that temporarily suspended operations and contributed to a 19 percent decline in copper production to 401 kilotonnes. The company cited planned lower grades, scheduled maintenance, temporary weather disruptions in Chile, and the Carrapateena conveyor failure as additional headwinds on its copper operations. Despite these operational pressures, BHP maintained all full-year production guidance unchanged, indicating management confidence in recovery through the remainder of the financial year.

The silver lining for investors came from commodity prices, which provided substantial tailwinds across the portfolio. Copper realised prices of USD 7.01 per pound were 53 percent higher than the same quarter a year ago, while steelmaking coal averaged USD 242.82 per tonne, up 34 percent. Energy coal prices also strengthened to USD 116.60 per tonne, 23 percent above the prior-year quarter. These price movements materially offset the production shortfalls, delivering what the company described as stronger earnings, particularly in copper where pricing benefits were most pronounced.

Performance across the broader commodity suite showed mixed results beyond copper. Western Australia Iron Ore delivered a 4 percent production increase to 66.5 million tonnes despite a maintenance-heavy quarter that included a major car dumper rebuild at Port Hedland. The operation set records at both mine and port facilities, demonstrating operational resilience. Energy coal from New South Wales Energy Coal climbed 26 percent to 4.4 million tonnes, reflecting higher bypass coal volumes and accelerated wash plant maintenance completion. Steelmaking coal production declined 13 percent to 4.9 million tonnes due to planned higher strip ratios and the temporary suspension following the Peak Downs fatality.

Looking ahead, BHP outlined continued momentum on growth initiatives. The Jansen potash project in Canada reached 87 percent completion and remains on track for first production in mid-2027, adding a new commodity dimension to the portfolio. The company secured USD 0.8 billion in pre-commitment funding for the Escondida New Concentrator and signed a memorandum of understanding with KGHM Polska Miedź to explore collaboration opportunities at Spence and Sierra Gorda. BHP also reported an updated mineral resource at Olympic Dam incorporating a new block cave mining scenario, expanding the assessed resource base to support longer-term production expansion planning toward 500 to 650 kilotonnes annually by 2040.

Investors should monitor how quickly copper operations return to planned run rates following the Escondida safety incident and maintenance completion, the execution progress on the Escondida New Concentrator and Jansen project, and whether upcoming commodity price movements either sustain or reverse the current tailwinds. This announcement is price sensitive and has been flagged as material by the ASX.
