Yancoal has completed its acquisition of an 80% stake in the Kestrel Coal Mine for US$1.85 billion, with the transaction closing on 1 October 2026. The Kestrel asset, a large-scale, long-life metallurgical coal operation in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, represents a material expansion of Yancoal’s exposure to premium steelmaking coal markets. The acquisition was funded through a combination of available cash and initial drawdown of a US$1.2 billion acquisition facility, while a US$200 million working capital facility remains undrawn.
In the September quarter itself, Yancoal reported attributable saleable coal production of 9.4 million tonnes and sales of 9.0 million tonnes at an average realised price of A$170 per tonne. This drove a A$340 million increase in the cash balance during the quarter, a result the company notes was achieved before payment of the interim dividend and the Kestrel acquisition costs. Year-to-date attributable saleable production ran 4 percent ahead of the prior corresponding period, with management tracking toward the upper half of its 2026 production guidance of 36.5 to 40.5 million tonnes. The quarterly production outcome was depressed by a planned longwall relocation at Moolarben, though the operation resumed normal production in September.
Coal market dynamics supported realised pricing. Thermal coal prices rose 7 percent and metallurgical coal prices increased 5 percent during the quarter, while seaborne thermal coal benchmark indices strengthened 14 to 17 percent overall. Yancoal’s realised prices typically lag these index movements due to the structure of its sales contracts, but the company indicated that recent benchmark strength has not yet fully flowed through to its realised pricing. This suggests potential for pricing improvements in the December quarter and beyond, particularly as Kestrel’s metallurgical coal exposure increases the company’s product mix toward higher-margin products.
Cost pressures warrant attention. The company guided that diesel prices, which have risen, are expected to push cash operating costs toward the upper end of its A$90 to A$98 per tonne guidance range for 2026. Safety metrics also deteriorated slightly, with the 12-month rolling Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate rising to 7.14 at quarter end from 7.00 at the end of June.
Management said it is targeting a new annual production record in 2026, with fourth quarter output on track to match 2025’s record performance if current quarterly output is replicated. The addition of Kestrel from October, though initially hampered by a scheduled longwall relocation in the fourth quarter, positions the company to deliver material earnings accretion from 2027 onwards as integration progresses. Investors should monitor the December quarter production and realised pricing outcomes, Kestrel’s integration progress, and the timing of federal approvals for the Hunter Valley Operations continuation project.
