Genesis Energy has delivered a strong operational start to FY27, marked by the commissioning of its first battery energy storage system at Huntly and achievement of final investment decision on the Leeston Solar Farm. These milestones represent meaningful progress on the company’s FY32 Growth Plan and signal an accelerating transition from thermal generation toward renewable and firming capacity. The Huntly BESS Stage 1, comprising 100 MW with 200 MWh of storage, is now operational, with Stage 2 design and procurement underway. Leeston Solar Farm, a 70 MWp facility, reached FID in August with construction expected to commence in Q2-Q3 FY27. Together with the Tihori Solar project on track for Q1 FY28 commissioning, these projects establish a credible pipeline for renewable capacity additions.
The company’s operational performance reflects favorable hydro conditions across New Zealand’s generation fleet, which suppressed wholesale electricity prices and allowed Genesis to flex its portfolio strategically. Thermal generation fell 79 percent to 163 GWh on the prior year quarter, with Unit 5 idled during the period. Total electricity sales declined 6 percent to 1,766 GWh, though the electricity netback improved 1.4 percent to $184 per MWh, reflecting the company’s repositioning toward higher-margin customer segments. Retail customer numbers grew 0.7 percent to 493,450, with electricity customers continuing to increase and LPG connections rising by 1,622. Management has emphasized strategic focus on margin quality rather than volume growth, with the successful consolidation of Frank and Ecotricity brands into a single Genesis product platform advancing this objective.
Genesis has strengthened its commercial position through strategic gas contracting, securing 11.4 PJ of third-party gas from March 2027 to December 2029 and exercising its right of first refusal on Kupe gas supplies, securing up to 8.6 PJ through December 2028. The company has also sold approximately 0.9 PJ to third parties for January and February 2027 delivery, supporting Unit 5’s planned extended shutdown and allowing redirection of gas to higher-value industrial customers. On the capital investment front, the company’s digital transformation programme remains on track with a total investment envelope of $145 million, with Release 2 and Release 3 implementations progressing through Q3 FY27.
Investors should monitor execution across three key areas over coming quarters. First, capital deployment toward renewable and BESS projects, particularly construction commencement on Leeston Solar in Q2-Q3 and progression of Huntly BESS Stage 2 in Q2. Second, customer migration success under the digital transformation program, especially residential and small business migration starting Q3 FY27 and commercial and industrial migration commencing Q2 FY27. Third, wholesale market conditions and gas supply dynamics, as hydro storage levels and gas market prices will significantly influence both generation strategy and retail margin performance. The announcement is price sensitive and has been flagged as material by the ASX.
