Santos (ASX: STO) – Santos Files Q3 2026 Quarterly Report

Santos (ASX: STO)View stock profile →

Santos delivered record quarterly production of 26.3 million barrels of oil equivalent in the third quarter of 2026, up 14 percent from the previous quarter and 23 percent year-over-year, marking the inflection point the company has been targeting as both its Barossa and Pikka projects ramp toward steady production. The stronger volume output translated directly into financial performance, with record free cash flow from operations reaching approximately $1,069 million for the quarter, driven by both higher production and realised LNG pricing that jumped to $16.22 per million British thermal units, up from $11.21 in the second quarter.

The cash generation capability is noteworthy for investors tracking Santos’ capital allocation. The company generated approximately $957 million in free cash flow during the quarter, pushing year-to-date free cash flow to $839 million despite higher capital expenditure. Management has narrowed full-year production guidance to 99 to 102 million barrels of oil equivalent from the prior 99 to 105 range, primarily reflecting delays to the Pikka seawater treatment plant commissioning and temporary production curtailments caused by a weather event and third-party pipeline incident. The guidance still reflects solid full-year execution with Pikka production expected to contribute increasingly through the final quarter as it holds steady at approximately 70,000 barrels per day during reservoir management optimisation before ramping to its 80,000 barrel plateau.

Beyond production operations, Santos is advancing growth initiatives that leverage its existing infrastructure footprint. The company executed a binding agreement to acquire an additional 3.3 percent participating interest in the Papua LNG project from TotalEnergies, bringing its total stake to 21 percent post State back-in, conditional on regulatory approvals and the project achieving final investment decision in the fourth quarter of 2026. Santos also entered binding agreements with GLNG joint venture partners to acquire the Greater Meridian coal seam gas project, where Santos will take a 30 percent interest and assume operatorship upon completion targeted for late 2026. The Meridian acquisition is forecast to add approximately 1 million barrels of oil equivalent annually to proforma production and 17 million barrels of oil equivalent of 2P reserves.

The Jibera South 1 appraisal well in the Beetaloo sub-basin also progressed meaningfully. Early drilling results show the Velkerri C shale layers performed better than expected while the A and B shales aligned with pre-drill expectations, increasing management confidence in a multi-horizon development approach that would unlock additional resource potential across Santos’ acreage. Drilling rates matched best-in-basin benchmarks.

Key catalysts heading forward include the Pikka ramp-up completion during the fourth quarter, execution of the Papua LNG final investment decision scheduled for Q4 2026, and completion of the Greater Meridian acquisition. The announcement is price sensitive and was flagged as material by the ASX.
