Accent Group’s FY26 results reveal a business navigating significant headwinds while managing a substantial $48.6 million non-cash goodwill impairment. The reported statutory loss of $13.8 million masks a more resilient underlying performance, with the company delivering underlying EBIT of $105.3 million and underlying NPAT of $51.0 million. This divergence between reported and underlying figures underscores the company’s past acquisition missteps but also highlights that the core trading business remains profitable despite challenging conditions.
Total sales grew modestly to $1.64 billion, up 1.2 percent year-on-year, with owned sales increasing 4.7 percent. However, the critical metric is concerning: like-for-like sales contracted 0.5 percent across the full year, with the second half deteriorating to negative 2.0 percent. The deterioration was particularly acute in Q4 as geopolitical tensions and collapsing consumer confidence impacted discretionary spending. Performance sports brands including The Athlete’s Foot, Hoka, Merrell and Saucony provided bright spots, while Nude Lucy achieved record sales and profitability, suggesting strength in specific segments despite overall market weakness.
Margin compression signals intensifying competitive pressure. Gross margin fell 180 basis points to 53.1 percent, reflecting the ongoing promotional environment and inventory discipline that Accent Group implemented to manage the slowdown. Excluding the closed loss-making businesses, gross margin was 54.1 percent, indicating the company is managing pricing and promotional exposure actively. Cost of doing business as a percentage of sales improved to 46.1 percent from 46.6 percent, demonstrating cost control measures, but this was insufficient to offset the gross margin decline.
The dividend cut is the most telling signal of management’s cautious outlook. The final dividend of 1.25 cents per share brings total FY26 distributions to 4.5 cents, down from 7.0 cents in FY25, a 35.7 percent reduction. For a company normally prioritizing shareholder returns, this cut suggests management expects continued headwinds and prefers to conserve cash. The decision reflects both near-term uncertainty and the need to fund strategic initiatives, including the Sports Direct expansion, the TAF franchise reacquisition program, and the 2030 Strategic Growth Plan.
Investors should monitor execution on the strategic initiatives announced, particularly the newly launched Sports Direct business and the progress of TAF franchise reacquisitions. The sustainability of the underlying EBIT margin in a deteriorating consumer environment will be critical. With like-for-like sales sliding and promotional intensity persisting, the company’s ability to defend profitability without further margin erosion will determine whether FY27 stabilizes or declines further.
