ALS (ASX: ALQ) – ALS Full Year Results Presentation

ALS Limited has reported a strong FY26 result, with underlying earnings growing 25.8% to $381.2 million, representing a record profit for the company. The performance was driven by revenue growth of 10.7% to $3.32 billion, with organic growth contributing 8.4% of that increase. More significantly, underlying EBIT margin expanded by 129 basis points to 18.0%, demonstrating genuine operational leverage rather than simple top-line expansion.

The company’s Commodities division, which represents about 39% of revenue, proved particularly robust. Minerals organic revenue grew 20.2% with margin expansion of 250 basis points to 33%, reflecting a cyclical uptick in exploration activity and improved pricing conditions as historical discounts were cycled out. Industrial Materials delivered double-digit organic growth in Oil and Lubricants and Inspection, though Coal and Oil and Lubricants margins were compressed by greenfield site expansions. Management achieved this performance amid significant capital investment, spending $93.7 million on four major hub laboratory upgrades that are positioned to unlock further operating leverage.

Life Sciences delivered mixed results. Food organic growth of 7.2% continued a three-year streak of strong performance, with particularly robust momentum in European markets. Pharmaceutical returned to modest decline of 1.6% on an organic basis, though Nuvisan margin improved approximately 450 basis points after successfully completing its transformation program ahead of schedule. Environmental organic growth of 2.8% reflected headwinds including ongoing challenges in Latin America and the US, partially offset by strong PFAS opportunity growth.

The financial position strengthened considerably. Free cash flow before capex increased $83.5 million to $674.1 million, with EBITDA cash conversion of 92.2%. The company deployed capital into hub laboratory projects, acquisitions, and dividends while still reducing net debt from $1.424 billion to $1.070 billion and leverage from 2.3x to 1.5x. The dividend increased 10.1% to 42.5 cents per share at a 57% payout ratio, demonstrating management’s confidence in ongoing cash generation.

Management guided toward mid to high single-digit organic revenue growth for FY27, with specific expectations for Minerals of 13 to 15% organic growth. The company flagged potential earnings headwinds from Middle East supply chain disruptions estimated at $5 to $10 million, though comprehensive procurement mitigation strategies are in place. Forex was expected to be a modest headwind of approximately $3 million on EBIT per 1% currency movement.

The company’s Lab of the Future initiative is transitioning from investment phase to early delivery, with management expecting the first tangible returns from automation and AI capabilities in FY27. With hub laboratory projects tracking on time and within budget, supply chain mitigation strategies in place, and strong cash generation supporting both growth investment and shareholder returns, performance against FY27 Minerals growth guidance and the progress of hub laboratory commissioning will be key indicators to monitor.
