Bank of Queensland (ASX: BOQ) – Bank of Queensland FY26 Results

Bank of Queensland (ASX: BOQ)View stock profile →

Bank of Queensland reported statutory net profit of $250 million for FY26, up 88% from the prior year, though this headline figure masks underlying operational challenges. Cash earnings excluding notable items fell 7% to $358 million, a more telling metric of core business performance. The divergence reflects one-off gains that boosted reported profit while operational earnings came under pressure, with management attributing the cash earnings decline to a non-repeat of a prior-year commercial lending write-back and lower average interest-earning assets offset partially by a 6 basis point improvement in net interest margin to 1.70%.

The results reveal a bank in transition. BOQ is deliberately reshaping its business toward a specialist model, which explains the conflicting signals in its lending portfolio. Home lending contracted 8% to $4.633 billion, reflecting management’s strategic pivot away from residential exposure toward commercial segments. In contrast, commercial lending grew 16% to $2.062 billion, concentrated in health, agriculture and small-to-medium enterprises where the bank claims deep expertise. This reallocation appears intentional rather than a reflection of market conditions, positioning BOQ as a more focused regional and specialist lender rather than a diversified retail bank.

Capital management took centre stage. BOQ completed capital initiatives including a $3.6 billion whole-of-loan sale of equipment finance assets to Challenger Limited, creating an ongoing forward flow arrangement. The common equity tier 1 ratio improved 70 basis points to 11.64%, supported by balance sheet optimisation and capital return to shareholders. Management declared a 20 cent fully franked dividend for the second half and a fully franked special dividend paid in August 2026. Return on average equity declined 30 basis points to 6.1%, reflecting lower earnings against the capital base, a metric investors will monitor as the company pursues its transformation strategy.

Cost discipline remained evident, with expenses rising only 2% and tracking below inflation despite the transformation underway. However, the 1% growth in total income alongside a 12% increase in non-interest income suggests revenue pressures in the core lending business. BOQ highlighted progress in digital adoption, with 88% of August home lending applications flowing through digital channels and over $2 billion in new deposits on its digital platform during FY26. The migration of ME customers to new platforms and the establishment of eight co-located retail and business branches position the bank for future growth, though these initiatives require sustained investment.

Investors should monitor how BOQ executes its specialist bank strategy and whether the 16% commercial lending growth rate proves sustainable beyond FY26. The capital partnerships with Challenger and ongoing digital scaling represent strategic bets requiring delivery against stated targets. Management’s assertion that it remains focused on sustainable shareholder growth warrants validation through capital efficiency metrics and earnings trajectory.
