BlueScope Steel delivered a significant earnings recovery in FY2026, with underlying EBIT of $1.27 billion, a $535 million increase from FY2025. The steelmaker’s return on invested capital improved to 10.7 percent from 6.2 percent, reflecting stronger pricing across its regional portfolio and the maturation of a major cost reduction program. Management guided for first-half FY2027 underlying EBIT between $860 million and $960 million, suggesting momentum into the new financial year.
The earnings lift was driven by a $441 million net spread increase in the second half, partly offset by softer performance in Australia and New Zealand due to sustained low Asian steel spreads. North Star, BlueScope’s US mini-mill operation, delivered robust results on materially higher spreads and continued 100 percent capacity utilisation. Southeast Asia posted record full-year performance, with $157 million in underlying EBIT. The company completed a $200 million net cost and productivity program on a FY2024 base and expects to deliver an additional $150 million in benefits during FY2027 through its reset operating model, which consolidated global functional teams to drive scale and standardisation.
On capital allocation, BlueScope has shifted its strategy toward higher shareholder distributions. The company delivered $3 per share in shareholder returns during calendar year 2026, comprising $1.65 per share paid during the first half and $1.35 per share to be paid in the second half, which includes a 65-cent ordinary dividend and a 70-cent special dividend. Management plans to repeat $3 per share in returns during CY2027, comprising $1.30 per share in ordinary dividends and $1.70 per share through buybacks and special distributions. This represents a material increase from the $275 million, or 63 cents per share, paid during CY2025.
BlueScope’s major capital project cycle is reaching completion, with three principal investments moving from construction to operation. The Western Sydney Metal Coating Line achieved its metal-on-strip milestone on 4 August 2026 and is ramping production to support 240 kilotonnes per annum of capacity. The New Zealand electric arc furnace produced its first heat on 3 August 2026 and is expected to reduce site emissions by approximately half while improving New Zealand’s country emissions by roughly 1 percent. The North Star debottlenecking project continues to progress across nine components, with three now complete, expected to unlock an additional 300 kilotonnes per annum of steelmaking capacity.
The company’s $1.2 billion surplus land portfolio is also generating value, with the West Dapto sale delivering $76 million in FY2026 and Western Port progressing an EOI process for a 65-hectare logistics hub. Management targets $500 million in EBIT uplift by FY2030 supported by these growth initiatives and macroeconomic normalisation.

Become an AR or CARInvestors should monitor progress on major project commissioning and ramp-up trajectories, management’s execution on cost initiatives extending into FY2027, and whether regional spread improvements sustain into the second half of FY2027 given the company’s lagged exposure to commodity prices. A key narrative will be management’s ability to sustain elevated shareholder distributions while continuing disciplined capital deployment toward the company’s longer-term growth initiatives.
