Champion Iron (ASX: CIA) – FY2027 Q2 Preliminary and Final Results

Champion Iron has reported preliminary Q2 FY2027 operational results showing 3.9 million wet metric tonnes of iron ore concentrate produced and 4.5 million dry metric tonnes sold at a net average realized price of $89.9 per dry metric tonne, generating $403.9 million in revenues. The company notes these figures are unaudited and subject to completion of its quarterly financial close, with final audited results due ahead of its October 29, 2026 conference call.

The realized price of $89.9/dmt provides the key metric for evaluating the quarter’s earnings performance. Iron ore prices have shown significant volatility, and this price point reflects market conditions during the September quarter. Champion operates through a geographic footprint spanning Canada and Norway, with the Bloom Lake complex in Quebec and Rana Gruber facility in Norway as primary producers. Bloom Lake is an open-pit mine with two concentration plants powered primarily by renewable hydroelectric energy, providing 15 million wet metric tonnes of combined nameplate capacity annually. The company specializes in high-purity iron ore, which commands a premium to major benchmarks like the Platts IODEX 61% Fe CFR China index.

The gap between production volumes of 3.9 million wet metric tonnes and sales volumes of 4.5 million dry metric tonnes reflects conversion processes and inventory timing. When a single quarter shows sales exceeding current production, it typically indicates either inventory drawdown or staggered shipment timing. The preliminary nature of these figures means full clarity on the underlying dynamics will arrive with audited results.

Champion is implementing a work program to upgrade up to half of Bloom Lake’s capacity to direct reduction quality pellet feed iron ore at up to 69% Fe. This represents a potential upside opportunity if successfully executed, as direct reduction grade products typically command higher prices than standard concentrate. The company’s current operational setup demonstrates the capability to produce direct reduction grade quality iron ore concentrate, providing a foundation for this transition.

Investors should note that this is preliminary, unaudited material subject to revision before the company’s formal audit procedures conclude. Management explicitly states that final results may differ materially from these preliminary estimates. This is standard practice for commodity producers with quarterly reporting, but it shows that these represent management’s current estimates pending full audit review and subject to the company’s continuous disclosure obligations.
