Champion Iron (ASX: CIA) – Q2 FY27 Quarterly Activities Report

Champion Iron’s second quarter saw record sales but a significant earnings miss, as the company grappled with lower commodity prices and elevated freight costs amid geopolitical headwinds. Net loss for the quarter came to $48.4 million, or $0.09 per share, compared to net income of $56.8 million a year earlier, despite consolidated sales hitting 4.5 million tonnes, a 17 percent increase year-over-year. The turnaround was driven primarily by lower iron ore indexes, C3 freight rates spiking due to the Middle East conflict, elevated fuel costs, and $6.9 million in direct reduction pellet feed project start-up costs. Adjusted for these items, the company reported a loss of $34.3 million.

The underlying operational picture tells a more complicated story. Bloom Lake, Champion’s flagship Canadian mine, produced 3.3 million tonnes of concentrates, down 6 percent from the prior year, as DRPF commissioning activities created processing inefficiencies. The acquisition of Rana Gruber in April contributed 0.5 million tonnes of production and $54.3 million in revenue. Yet despite higher volumes sold, gross margin compression was severe. Net average realized selling price fell to $89.9 per dry tonne, down 16 percent quarter-on-quarter and 30 percent year-over-year, reflecting both lower P65 index pricing and unfavorable provisional pricing adjustments. The company’s cash cost per tonne rose to $82.9 from $76.2 a year ago, squeezing the cash operating margin into negative territory at $8.0 per tonne versus a positive $31.1 per tonne last year.

The one bright spot was completion of the inaugural commercial shipment of DRPF product during the quarter. Champion has secured additional test cargoes and commercial agreements for third-quarter shipments, with management citing growing market interest in the higher-purity direct reduction product, which can reach up to 69 percent iron content and access shorter freight routes to key customers. This represents a key moment for the company, as the transition from standard high-purity concentrates to DR-grade material could help recapture margin as the market shifts toward direct reduction steelmaking.

However, near-term financial stress is evident. Available liquidity stood at $618.4 million as of September 30, down from $653.1 million a quarter earlier, while the company faces ongoing pressure from the timing lag between when vessels are booked, three to five weeks ahead, and when freight costs are realized. DRPF ramp-up remains the critical variable. If the project achieves commercial production scale and customers accept the product at premium pricing, the company’s fortunes could turn materially. If commissioning delays extend or the premium fails to materialize, cash burn will accelerate.

CEO David Cataford emphasized that the priority is now to optimize assets, strengthen the balance sheet, and pursue cost-reduction initiatives following completion of the major investment cycle at Bloom Lake. The next quarter will be instructive in whether the DRPF project can translate early customer interest into volume and pricing momentum. This announcement is price sensitive and has been flagged as material by the ASX.
