Coronado Global Resources (ASX: CRN)View stock profile →

Coronado Global Resources has signalled a sharp operational turnaround in the June quarter, with the company returning to positive earnings for the first time since the second quarter of 2024. The rebound reflects production and cost improvements across its Australian coal assets, with group run-of-mine production climbing 18.4 percent to 6.4 million tonnes compared to the March quarter, while saleable production surged 39.3 percent to 4.1 million tonnes. Earnings improved by approximately US$100 million quarter-on-quarter, marking a material inflection point for the coal producer.

The recovery comes after Coronado experienced operational headwinds and planned activities in the first quarter, which had depressed production and financial performance. The June quarter results suggest those impacts have largely been resolved, with the company now demonstrating improved execution across its operating base. Management attributed the rebound to operational improvements and favourable mining conditions, supported by a structural reset program that is nearing the end of its first phase. The programme, backed by consulting firms AlixPartners and Odin Partnership, has been focused on improving productivity and cost efficiency across the group’s assets.

Mine-by-mine performance has been striking. Buchanan, which underwent expansion last year, delivered record first-half run-of-mine production of 4.7 million tonnes, representing 26.2 percent growth compared to the prior corresponding period. The operation generated approximately US$60 million in earnings year-to-date and continues to achieve lower unit cost levels. Curragh, the company’s second major asset, staged a significant recovery with run-of-mine production jumping 74 percent to 3.9 million tonnes and saleable production increasing 75.6 percent to 3.0 million tonnes in the quarter. The Curragh coal handling and preparation plant achieved record operating hours in five years, indicating sustained throughput improvements.

Cost discipline has sharpened measurably. Group mining cash costs declined 27.7 percent quarter-on-quarter to US$97.9 per tonne, driven by higher saleable production volumes and improved plant utilisation. Management expects further cost reductions as the reset program progresses. The company is also advancing a planned sale of its Logan Complex, which has been exposed to challenging high-volatility market segments. The sale is expected to close imminently, removing a source of ongoing negative cash flow. At quarter end, cash stood at approximately US$98 million, with management noting that additional customer and marketing arrangements are expected to provide further liquidity support.

Investors will want to track several developments closely. The completion of phase one of the reset programme and management’s full half-year results disclosure should provide clarity on the sustainability of current operational improvements and the trajectory for group cash generation. The outcome of the Logan Complex sale will signal whether Coronado has successfully repositioned its portfolio. Additionally, continued execution at Buchanan and sustained performance improvements at Curragh will be critical to validating the operational turnaround. This announcement has been identified as price sensitive and classified as material to the market by the ASX.
