Deterra Royalties (ASX: DRR) – Deterra Royalties Q7 2026 Portfolio Update

Deterra Royalties (ASX: DRR) A$4.00 0.00%View stock profile →

Deterra has acquired a net smelter return royalty over Ivanhoe Electric’s Santa Cruz copper project in Arizona for US$74.15 million, marking a significant portfolio addition with expected near-term cash generation. The company commissioned the acquisition during the September 2026 quarter and projects average annual royalty revenue of approximately US$10.7 million over the first 15 years of mining, based on current copper price assumptions, representing a 14.4% annualized yield on the investment.

The Santa Cruz acquisition addresses a structural shift in Deterra’s revenue profile as the company transitions from single-revenue-stream operations into a diversified royalty portfolio. Mining Area C iron ore royalties, which generated A$45.8 million in the September quarter, declined 15% year on year due to lower sales volumes and pricing pressure. While MAC remains a multi-decade foundation asset accounting for the majority of current earnings, Santa Cruz provides exposure to a large-scale copper project with earlier cash flow timing than the Thacker Pass lithium development.

Deterra secured a competitive advantage in the Santa Cruz acquisition through an information-access agreement with Ivanhoe Electric, which reduced the royalty rate but positioned the company as the only non-blind bidder in the sale process. Santa Cruz is permitted for initial construction with first copper cathode production targeted for 2029. The project has an initial 24-year mine life and average production of approximately 75,000 tonnes of copper cathode per annum over the first 15 years. Deterra holds a 1.68% net smelter return royalty in the initial years, stepping down to 1.57% after the sixth anniversary of commercial production.

Progress on the Thacker Pass lithium project continues advancing with construction approximately 55% complete. Lithium Americas has received US$1.45 billion of the committed US$2.23 billion Department of Energy loan, with mechanical completion targeted for late 2027 and commercial production ramp-up in 2028. Detailed engineering design is more than 95% complete and procurement exceeds 80%, with over 1,600 workers on site expected to increase to more than 2,000 by end of 2026. Thacker Pass holds the world’s largest measured lithium resource and targets 160,000 tonnes per annum of battery-quality lithium carbonate production across four phases.

Investors should monitor completion of project financing for Santa Cruz, with the company targeting operational and life-of-mine permitting during 2026 and 2027. Deterra management stated expectations for the Santa Cruz acquisition to be accretive to earnings and cash flow once the project reaches production. The executive search for a new managing director and chief executive officer continues. This announcement has been designated price sensitive and flagged as material by the ASX.
