Fortescue (ASX: FMG) – Fortescue Reports FY26 Full Year Results

Fortescue Metals Group (ASX: FMG) A$14.59 ▲ +0.55%View stock profile →

Fortescue has delivered strong FY26 results, posting underlying net profit after tax of US$3.5 billion and free cash flow of US$3.2 billion, which underpin fully franked dividends of A$1.08 per share. The company’s ability to generate substantial returns while maintaining balance sheet strength reflects the structural advantages of its low-cost Pilbara operations and disciplined capital allocation.

Operationally, Fortescue demonstrated sustained excellence. Record iron ore shipments of 201.3 million tonnes, combined with an industry-leading Hematite C1 unit cost of US$18.74 per wet metric tonne, position the company at the forefront of operational efficiency. Underlying EBITDA climbed 9 percent year-on-year to US$8.6 billion with a margin of 51 percent, showcasing earnings durability even as the iron ore market navigates cyclical pressures. Safety performance also improved with a Leading Safety Index of 172 and Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate of 1.3, underlining management’s commitment to operational discipline.

The balance sheet remains a key strength. With US$5.1 billion in cash and just US$0.9 billion in net debt, Fortescue maintains significant flexibility to pursue growth investments and weather downturns. The company deployed US$3.6 billion in capital expenditure during the year while paying a 65 percent payout of underlying net profit after tax, demonstrating confidence in both the current earnings base and future cash generation. This financial positioning provides strategic optionality that many global peers lack.

Fortescue’s strategic growth initiatives warrant close attention. The Green Grid project, comprising 2.4 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity, continues progressing and offers dual benefits: strengthening the company’s long-term cost competitiveness in the Pilbara while creating optionality to supply renewable energy to third parties. The acquisition of Alta Copper signals ambitions beyond iron ore, securing exploration assets including the Cañariaco Copper Project in Peru. The company has surpassed 230,000 metres of exploration drilling at the Belinga Iron Ore Project in Gabon, pointing toward potential future ore sources.

Investors should monitor the Blacksmith Project, which management claims will improve the C1 unit cost profile, as well as Green Grid commercialisation and copper exploration progress. Management highlighted artificial intelligence as a significant opportunity to drive productivity gains across drilling, processing and energy systems, suggesting another avenue for cost improvement. The company reported total economic contribution of A$27.2 billion in FY26, reflecting its significance to Australian communities and shareholders. This announcement is classified as price sensitive and flagged as material by the ASX.
