Lynas Rare Earths announced on 1 October 2026 that it would acquire 100 percent of Meteoric Resources through a scheme of arrangement, paying a fixed exchange ratio of 0.0207 new Lynas shares per Meteoric share. The acquisition targets Meteoric’s Caldeira project in Brazil, which holds the largest known ionic clay rare earth oxide mineral resource outside China. On a pro forma basis, the transaction is forecast to increase Lynas’ reported Measured and Indicated TREO mineral resources by approximately 79 percent and ore reserves by approximately 26 percent, while adding an estimated 802 kilotonnes of NdPr oxides and 41 kilotonnes of DyTb oxides to the combined resource base. This represents a material expansion of the company’s resource pipeline and positions management to execute the stated “Towards 2030” growth strategy.
The Meteoric acquisition announcement arrives against the backdrop of a strong operational quarter. Q1 FY27 saw quarterly gross sales revenue reach A$310.1 million, up 55 percent from the prior corresponding period and the highest quarterly result since Q4 FY22. The average selling price across all rare earth products hit a record A$102.1 per kilogram, an 88 percent increase year-on-year. Management attributed this pricing strength to improved market conditions, increased bundling of light and heavy rare earths for magnet customers, and a higher premium above market indices, with floor price agreements now covering over 50 percent of production. NdPr production reached 2,082 tonnes in the quarter, a new record for the downstream processing facility at Lynas Malaysia.
Separately, Lynas has progressed two strategic partnerships aimed at building out the downstream supply chain outside China. In July 2026, the company signed a long-term partnership with JS Link to develop a magnet factory in Malaysia with 3,000 tonnes per annum capacity, with Lynas investing approximately A$50 million in equity to support construction. The same month, Lynas entered into binding agreements with LS Eco Energy, a subsidiary of LS Cable and System, for cross-subscription of convertible instruments worth A$29 million each. These instruments carry zero interest, five-year maturity, and conversion options from year three. The partnerships aim to create integrated supply chains for magnet and metal-making customers outside China.
Lynas closed the quarter with A$1,212.5 million in cash and short-term deposits, up slightly from A$1,209.1 million at the end of Q4 FY26. The company paid A$28.7 million for capital expenditure, exploration and development during the quarter, with ongoing construction progress on the expanded Heavy Rare Earths facility in Malaysia. Planned maintenance at the Malaysia facility during Q2 FY27 is expected to result in lower production volumes compared with the current quarter. Investors should monitor regulatory approvals for the Meteoric acquisition in Brazil, progress on the LS Eco Energy metal-making definitive agreement, and production metrics as the company continues ramping capacity toward its stated targets.
