Rio Tinto delivered a significant financial performance upgrade in the first half of 2026, with underlying EBITDA reaching $14.8 billion, representing 28 percent growth from the prior year period. The mining major converted this operational strength into cash generation, with free cash flow surging 75 percent to $3.8 billion, while the interim dividend increased 43 percent to $3.4 billion.
The earnings growth was underpinned by two primary drivers. Copper EBITDA expanded 84 percent year-on-year, with the commodity now representing 57 percent of the group’s underlying EBITDA as the Oyu Tolgoi mine in Mongolia continues its ramp-up trajectory. The company reported copper production of 442 kilotonnes for the half, tracking toward its full-year guidance of 800-870 kilotonnes. Beyond commodity prices, Rio Tinto’s management-led productivity program delivered $870 million in annualized run-rate savings as of June 30, with the company targeting $1.8 billion by year-end 2026, representing a near-doubling of the prior December baseline.
Iron ore remained resilient with H1 2026 EBITDA broadly stable despite a 7 percent production decline at the Pilbara operations, partly attributable to cyclone-related disruptions. The company reported the highest Pilbara production on record at 170 million tonnes. Simandou, the major greenfield iron ore project in Guinea, continues advancing at pace with shipments now underway and the company targeting a 75 to 90-day cycle to China delivery.
Lithium operations contributed 27 kilotonnes of carbonate equivalent production in the first half following the March 2025 completion of the Arcadium acquisition. The business generated $0.6 billion in free cash flow, though capital-intensive inflight projects to 200 kilotonnes of capacity by 2028 will require sustained investment.
Rio Tinto’s capital allocation framework emphasizes shareholder returns alongside reinvestment. The company maintained its capex guidance of up to $11 billion for the 2026-27 period, with an expected step-down to $10 billion annually in the medium term. The $3.4 billion interim dividend represents a 50 percent payout ratio, consistent with the group’s half-year practice within its stated 40-60 percent through-cycle policy. Management indicated potential cash release of $5-10 billion from the asset base, reflecting portfolio optimization initiatives.
The balance sheet remains robust with net debt of $14.1 billion and ratings agencies maintaining single-A credit ratings. The company expects EBITDA to interest coverage will improve materially as the productivity program continues running through the business.

Become an AR or CARInvestors should monitor three key developments. First, the trajectory of copper production ramp-up at Oyu Tolgoi remains critical given the commodity’s outsized contribution to earnings growth. Second, the execution of the productivity program beyond the 2026 targets will determine whether the operational leverage seen in this period proves sustainable. Finally, the timing and quantum of the signaled asset sales will influence both capital discipline and shareholder return capacity in the coming periods.
