Sonic Healthcare (ASX: SHL) – Sonic Healthcare Files Annual Report

Sonic Healthcare (ASX: SHL) A$19.07 ▲ +1.06%View stock profile →

Sonic Healthcare reported a strong financial year with underlying net profit rising 17% to A$621 million on revenue growth of 13%, including organic growth of 5%. The company achieved its earnings guidance and declared total dividends of A$1.08 per share, continuing its progressive dividend history. These results demonstrate the resilience of the diagnostics business model across the company’s diversified geographic portfolio.

The profit growth outpaced revenue growth, reflecting operational leverage and margin expansion across key markets. Management attributed this to strength in advanced diagnostics, with Sonic Genetics in Australia growing 15% and Biovis in Germany achieving 12% growth. The integration of the LADR acquisition in Germany, completed on 1 July 2025, contributed A$59 million of net profit during the financial year and is already delivering returns above the company’s cost of capital. This acquisition strengthened Sonic’s position in one of the world’s largest diagnostics markets and expanded the group’s footprint into Poland.

The company invested substantially in digital transformation and operational improvement initiatives. Management committed to approximately A$30 million per annum over the next three years to modernise the global digital infrastructure, covering back-office platforms, laboratory and radiology operating systems, and clinical applications. This investment reflects confidence in the long-term opportunity to enhance efficiency and innovation capabilities across the business.

The results reveal operational challenges that require monitoring. United States organic revenue growth was 2% after adjusting for the loss of a major payer contract in Alabama and rationalisation of unprofitable anatomical pathology practices. Management is undertaking a comprehensive operating review targeting A$25 to A$30 million in additional earnings for FY2027 through cost initiatives and procurement savings. The United Kingdom business is also in transition, with the Watford hub laboratory operational but the transfer of testing volumes from the NHS contract progressing slower than anticipated due to operational issues within the NHS. Planned margins for the contract are now expected by the second half of FY2028 rather than earlier.

Sonic’s balance sheet remains solid with net debt of A$3,069 million and debt cover of 2.2 times, supporting the investment-grade rating. The company completed a sale and leaseback of its Brisbane hub laboratory for A$445 million, releasing capital at an effective pre-tax cost of approximately 5.6%. The leadership transition to new CEO Dr Jim Newcombe is also significant, with the board expressing confidence in his vision centred on high-value medicine at scale and operational excellence.

Investors should monitor progress on the US operating review and the UK NHS contract integration, as well as whether the digital transformation investment delivers expected productivity gains. The company’s organic growth momentum and ability to continue integrating acquisitions effectively will be key factors determining whether this profitable growth trajectory can be sustained.
