Transurban Group (ASX: TCL) – Transurban Group FY26 Investor Presentation

Transurban Group has guided FY27 distributions at 72 cents per security, representing continued growth supported by strengthening operational performance. The FY26 distribution of 69 cents per security marked 6.2% growth over the prior year, underpinned by proportional EBITDA expansion of 7.5% to $3,063 million. Free Cash Flow increased 5.1% to $2,111 million, covering distributions at 98.1%, providing confidence in the sustainability of the payout profile. The company’s ability to grow distributions while maintaining strong cash coverage reflects disciplined capital allocation and the quality of its underlying asset base.

Revenue growth across the portfolio reached 6.7% to $3,982 million, driven by a combination of traffic volume increases and toll escalations. Group average daily traffic increased 2.2%, with performance varying across markets. Sydney posted 1.2% traffic growth but generated 4.4% toll revenue growth through pricing mechanisms, while Melbourne delivered 3.1% traffic growth including the contribution from the West Gate Tunnel project that opened in December 2025. North America showed 3.5% traffic growth, with the U.S. business continuing to outperform the domestic portfolio. The company notes that traffic in June and July showed a more positive trajectory than earlier in the year, suggesting the operating environment may be stabilizing after headwinds in the first half.

Operating cost discipline remained a standout feature of the result. Proportional operating costs grew just 0.7% on a like-for-like basis, excluding the West Gate Tunnel project, marking the third consecutive year of cost growth below inflation. This cost control helped drive operating EBITDA margin expansion to 75.7%, up from 74.9% in the prior year. Management has guided FY27 operating cost growth to remain below consumer price index, subject to development activity levels. The narrowing of cost growth relative to revenue expansion demonstrates the improving operational leverage of the portfolio as newly delivered projects mature.

The company is building a substantial pipeline of growth opportunities, with more than $10 billion of projects under consideration. These include the I-95 Express Lanes Bi-Directional Project in Virginia, which would add approximately 120 additional lane miles to the existing corridor, the proposed M2-M7 Widening in Sydney targeted for 2031 opening, and the Logan West Upgrade in Brisbane which has progressed to procurement. Management is also progressing discussions with multiple governments on road user charging policy changes and conducting community engagement on emerging projects. The breadth of the pipeline and the diversity of opportunities across its geographic footprint provide multiple avenues for capital deployment in coming years.

Investors should monitor several near-term factors. The West Gate Tunnel project, which opened late in the 2025 calendar year, has shown flat traffic since February 2026 and will take longer to reach Free Cash neutrality. This timing creates a drag on cash generation that management expects to reverse as traffic ramps. The implementation timeline for the NSW Toll Reform proposal and any government investment decisions around the M2-M7 Widening will also shape near-term growth prospects. Finally, the progression of the North American pipeline, particularly the I-95 Bi-Directional Project design phase and VDOT approval process, warrants close tracking given the scale of that opportunity.
