Temple & Webster has shifted its strategic focus toward the mass-mid market segment while projecting EBITDA growth of 50 to 80 percent in FY27, a significant acceleration from the 17 percent growth delivered in FY26. The furniture and homewares retailer reported record FY26 revenue of $665 million, up 11 percent year on year, though net profitability remained modest at $21.9 million EBITDA with a 3.3 percent margin. Management’s updated guidance targets $33 to $40 million EBITDA for FY27, suggesting the business expects material operational leverage from its restructured strategy and AI-driven initiatives.
The company’s decision to deprioritize entry-level product ranges in favor of higher-quality offerings reflects a deliberate repositioning. Management notes that market segments outside entry-level represent the largest revenue opportunity and contain over 75 percent of industry profit. Testing across multiple product categories showed this shift increases both revenue and margin, with a linen category test generating an 11 percent revenue lift and a year-on-year margin improvement of 11 percent. Private label products now represent over 50 percent of revenue, up from lower levels historically, supporting this margin expansion narrative.
The scale of the AI investment warrants investor attention. Temple & Webster is embedding artificial intelligence across five core areas: customer journeys, internal workflows, marketing campaigns, supplier and carrier selection, and coding acceleration. The company reports 58,000 product pages have been republished to enable AI assistant recommendations, with AI-powered complementary product recommendations showing a 56 percent conversion rate increase. A proprietary data insights agent has begun performing supplier analysis in minutes rather than days. These initiatives appear designed to widen the cost advantage over traditional retail, with fixed costs declining from 12 percent to 10 percent of revenue over three years.
Recent trading patterns show tension between near-term and medium-term performance. Year-to-date revenue through October 19 declined 8 percent compared with the prior year, with contribution margin dollars up 16 percent over the same period. This suggests product mix and unit economics have improved despite lower top-line sales. Management attributes the revenue decline to comparison against periods with heavier promotional activity, and projects a return to growth from late February 2027 when these comparisons ease.
The company has appointed new CEO Susie Sugden and restructured its board, with founder Mark Coulter moving to executive chair and Stephen Heath transitioning to lead independent director. The $123 million cash position, maintained after a $30 million share buyback, provides capital flexibility for the strategic initiatives outlined. New Zealand represents a test case for the AI-led operating model, having achieved contribution margin break-even within six months of launch.
