Treasury Wine Estates (ASX: TWE)View stock profile →

Treasury Wine Estates swung to a loss of $1.08 billion for the financial year ended 30 June 2026, down from a profit of $437 million in the prior year, as the wine company grappled with revenue headwinds and material write-downs. The $1.51 billion swing in profitability reflects the severity of challenges facing the business, with revenue declining 12.2 percent to $2.63 billion from $2.99 billion a year earlier.

The underlying earnings picture proves similarly weak. Net profit after tax before material items and SGARA fell 41.5 percent to $275.3 million, while EBITSA on the same basis collapsed 60.3 percent to $195.3 million from $492.3 million. The gap between the statutory loss and the underlying profit suggests material impairments or write-downs, likely reflecting valuation pressures in the company’s asset base, particularly around inventory and brand values which are typically significant for wine producers. Basic earnings per share dropped sharply to negative 133.4 cents from 34.1 cents, though adjusted EPS excluding SGARA and material items declined more modestly to 53.8 cents from 58.0 cents, indicating that earnings power remains above zero when stripping out one-off charges.

The deterioration in tangible asset backing offers insight into the scale of balance sheet damage. Net tangible asset backing per share fell 9.8 percent to $2.86 from $3.17, a meaningful decline that represents erosion in shareholder value. This metric matters because it represents the hard assets backing each share, and declines typically signal either operational losses or write-downs of asset values.

Notably, the board has maintained the final dividend at 20.0 cents per share despite the loss, suggesting confidence that the downturn is cyclical rather than structural. This approach carries some risk if operational performance does not recover quickly, as it might place pressure on liquidity or require asset sales to sustain distributions.

The significant revenue decline and earnings collapse point to sector headwinds, likely reflecting weak export markets, particularly China which is crucial for Australian wine, challenging domestic conditions, or both. The scale of the revenue drop suggests this is not merely a profitability margin issue but a volume or pricing problem hitting the top line. Investors should watch for signs of stabilization in coming periods and management commentary on demand trends in key export markets. The Annual General Meeting scheduled for 15 October 2026 will provide an opportunity for shareholders to probe the company on recovery plans and the sustainability of the dividend. This announcement has been flagged as price sensitive and material by the ASX.
