Yancoal Australia delivered a record quarterly production result in the June quarter, achieving 10.8 million tonnes of attributable saleable coal output, representing a 20% lift from the prior quarter and the company’s best quarterly performance to date. Combined with a realised coal price of A$160 per tonne, the result reflects the benefits of operational momentum and a favourable commodity price environment that saw most seaborne thermal coal indices rise between 14% and 19% during the quarter, despite some softening in late June.
The production record comes as Yancoal executes a transition planned for earlier in the year, shifting from waste removal activities to full coal mining operations across its portfolio. This operational leverage is translating into strong first-half results, with 19.8 million tonnes of attributable saleable coal production representing a 5% increase compared to the prior year and placing the company on track to exceed its 2025 production record. Management’s guidance for 2026 output of 36.5 to 40.5 million tonnes remains unchanged, but the company now expects to operate at the upper end of this range, suggesting confidence in sustained operational performance through the remainder of the year.
The company’s balance sheet position strengthened further, with cash reserves reaching A$2.01 billion at 30 June. This financial strength provides flexibility for capital allocation and positions Yancoal well to execute its growth strategy, particularly around the pending Kestrel Coal Mine acquisition. The 80% stake in the metallurgical coal operation has cleared Foreign Investment Review Board approval, with completion targeted for the end of the September quarter, though the company indicates completion could arrive earlier. Adding a large, long-life asset producing hard-coking coal at strong margins aligns with management’s stated growth ambitions.
Operating cost guidance of A$90 to A$98 per tonne has not changed, with the company noting that earlier concerns around diesel price impacts have moderated somewhat, though costs are expected to track toward the upper half of the range. Capital expenditure is now expected at the low end of the A$750 to A$900 million guidance as some projects slip into 2027. A countervailing factor is the announcement that Ashton operations will cease from early 2028, reflecting technical, geotechnical and economic challenges at that asset. The decision signals management’s willingness to exit marginal production and redeploy capital toward higher-return opportunities.
For investors, the key takeaway is that Yancoal is operating at peak capacity and generating strong cash generation in a period of elevated coal prices. The Kestrel acquisition, once completed, will materially enhance the portfolio with a higher-quality, long-life asset. Attention should focus on the completion timing and integration of Kestrel, the execution of the Ashton closure plan, and whether the current commodity price environment can be sustained. The announcement is price sensitive and has been flagged as material by the ASX.
