Appen (ASX: APX) – Q3 FY26 Quarterly Activity Report

Appen Limited reported Q3 FY26 revenue of $73.9 million, representing 34% growth against the prior corresponding period and 13% expansion on the previous quarter. The underlying EBITDA (before FX) reached $10.3 million, demonstrating a significant turnaround from a year earlier. More importantly, Appen Global returned to profitability in the quarter with EBITDA of $5.6 million, a swing from a loss of $1.3 million in Q2. This profitability inflection is material for investors tracking the company’s operational leverage in its core frontier AI market.

The growth narrative splits clearly between two division stories. Appen China continues its acceleration with $46.1 million in quarterly revenue, up 61% year-on-year, and September revenue ran at an annualized rate exceeding $190 million. The underlying EBITDA grew 101% year-on-year to $6.7 million. This performance reflects generative AI project demand and support for Chinese technology companies expanding internationally. Appen Global’s recovery is equally compelling: outside its largest customer, Q3 revenue grew 70% on the previous quarter. This demonstrates that growth is not concentrated in one relationship but spreading across the customer base as new projects commence.

The most striking development is Appen’s market position with frontier AI model builders. The company added two leading US-based AI model builders as customers during the quarter, including a former major customer returning to the fold. Appen now works with seven of the eight largest US-based AI model builders, with a pipeline to the eighth. The company notes that several of these relationships are early stage with modest FY26 revenue but significant growth potential. This customer concentration among the most advanced AI labs is a competitive moat that differentiates Appen from potential competitors.

Management maintained its FY26 guidance of $270 million to $300 million in revenue and underlying EBITDA (before FX) margin of approximately 5% to 10%. The company flagged that current visibility suggests revenue will land in the lower half of the range with EBITDA margin in the upper half. This guidance positioning reflects the lumpy nature of large project wins in the AI space. The company retains $42.6 million in cash and generated positive operating cash flow of $4.0 million during the quarter.

Investors should monitor the trajectory of AI model builder spending on data in coming quarters. The pipeline commentary suggests upside to FY26 guidance if projects accelerate or scale faster than expected. Conversely, any slowdown in frontier AI development spending would present downside risk. The sustainability of the 70% growth in Appen Global outside the largest customer and the ramp of newly won relationships will shape investor confidence in the company’s ability to grow into its guidance. This announcement is price sensitive material as flagged by the ASX.
