New Hope Corporation has reported a significant expansion of coal resources at its Bengalla Mine, with a total resource increase of 262 million tonnes driven by updated geological modelling and recent exploration drilling. The 2026 coal resource estimate for Bengalla now stands at 584 million tonnes, representing material growth in the company’s resource base and extending its operational potential into adjacent exploration licences. This represents the most substantial change reported across New Hope’s portfolio of coal operations in the 2026 update.

The Bengalla expansion reflects two distinct contributions to the resource growth. Underground resources have increased from 76 million tonnes in 2025 to 100 million tonnes in 2026, while an additional 238 million tonnes of open cut resources has been identified within the exploration licence areas. This split is significant for investors, as it provides flexibility in how the company may develop the resource base going forward. The underground resources represent extensions within existing mining leases, while the open cut component opens the possibility of broader operational footprint across exploration licences EL9431 and EL9863.

The announcement includes an important qualification for investors. While the resource increase is encouraging, New Hope notes that further mine planning and economic analysis are required before these resources can be converted into ore reserves. A concept-level study has already been completed to assess the potential extension of operations, and the company is continuing pre-feasibility study work on continuation of the Bengalla Mine beyond current approvals. This signals that the resource definition work is ahead of the economic and planning work, which is typical for development-stage expansions.

Other operations within New Hope’s portfolio have not changed materially. Resources and reserves at West Muswellbrook, Elimatta, Collingwood, Taroom and Woori remain consistent with the previous 2025 statement, indicating that the 2026 update is driven primarily by the Bengalla discoveries and updated modelling.

For investors, the Bengalla resource growth provides a positive medium-term narrative around the company’s operational life and growth potential, particularly given current coal market dynamics. However, the path from resource to reserve to production requires completion of the pre-feasibility studies and subsequent approvals. The company’s stated intent to conduct pre-feasibility work on extending operations beyond current approvals suggests an active development pathway, but timelines and economic viability remain to be determined through these studies.

The key metric to monitor will be progress on the pre-feasibility studies and any outcomes regarding the economic viability of extending Bengalla operations into the exploration licence areas. Updates on these studies and any changes to development timelines will provide clearer direction on the value creation potential from the newly defined resources. This announcement is classified as price sensitive and has been flagged as material by the ASX.
