Zimplats Holdings Limited has announced a leadership transition, with Chief Executive Officer Alexander Mhembere retiring effective 1 November 2026 after 19 years in the role. The company has appointed Dr Stanley John Segula, an internal executive with over three decades of mining industry experience, as his successor. Mhembere will transition to Chairman of Zimbabwe Platinum Mines, the company’s operating subsidiary.
Mhembere’s tenure since October 2007 marks a significant operational transformation for Zimplats. The company evolved from open-pit mining origins into a predominantly mechanised underground operation with integrated processing. Under his leadership, Zimplats executed a US$1.8 billion strategic investment programme encompassing mine replacement and development, expanded concentrator capacity, and an upgraded Selous smelter that has tripled smelting capacity. The company also commissioned a 35MW solar power plant and has outlined a planned 185MW renewable energy programme. Beyond operational improvements, Mhembere’s tenure saw emphasis on skills development, local procurement, enterprise participation, and community infrastructure investment.
Segula’s appointment brings deep institutional knowledge and operational experience to the top role. He has served as Managing Director of Zimbabwe Platinum Mines since May 2015 and previously held senior operational positions including Chief Operating Officer and Senior General Manager of Mining. His qualifications include a PhD in Strategic Management and Leadership, an MBA, a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering, a Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency, and professional engineer certification. The Board characterised his appointment as supporting an orderly leadership transition and continuity in the company’s strategic direction.
The succession represents a managed transition with minimal external disruption. Mhembere’s retention as Chairman of the operating subsidiary preserves governance continuity and institutional knowledge, while Segula’s elevation from within the existing executive team removes the execution risk associated with external recruitment. The Board expects steady execution of the company’s strategic initiatives, including completion of the renewable energy programme and ongoing optimisation of the underground mining and smelting platform.
